Crypto users are reaching for scales after a tampered hardware wallet scandal tied to roughly $93 million in reported thefts. However, this so-called proof of weight can expose an implant without proving a device is clean.
The check gained traction after Ledger confirmed a hidden implant in a device sold through CryptoBilis, a reseller Ledger lists for Southeast Asia. Ledger says its own systems remain uncompromised, yet the affected device reportedly reached its buyer through that listed channel.
Why Owners Are Putting Their Hardware Wallet on a Scale
Weighing appeals because it leaves a sealed device untouched. Manufacturers publish reference figures for comparison.
Ledger lists the Nano X at 34 grams, while Trezor puts its Safe 3 at 14 grams. Owners then compare that figure with their own reading.
In theory, an extra circuit board, antenna, and cellular modem add mass, so a heavier hardware wallet looks suspicious.
Former Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpelès found that setup in a sealed Nano X bought in Malaysia. According to him, a hidden spy chip read the recovery phrase off the screen and sent it out over a cellular connection.
Why a Few Grams Prove Little Either Way
However, the implant never needed a perfect match. In Karpelès’ unit, the board sat behind the screen while a shorter battery freed room, shrinking the added weight.
Karpelès himself put the remaining difference at roughly one gram. According to him, that falls within normal factory variance, since batteries of equal capacity can differ in weight.
A kitchen scale reading in one-gram steps cannot separate that gap from a small implant. Precision micro scales do better, but only when calibrated against a reference weight. Opening the casing remains the only direct way to inspect a hardware wallet board.
Ledger’s own advice goes further. The company paused reseller sales and urged recent CryptoBilis buyers to skip hardware wallet setup entirely.
Ultimately, a kitchen scale only catches a crude implant, not a careful one. As hardware wallet attacks move from software into the device itself, buying straight from the manufacturer may matter more than any home test.
