KuCoin Nigeria Secures Conditional SEC Approval as Country Ranks Third Globally in Crypto Adoption

KuCoin Nigeria Limited has received conditional Approval-in-Principle (AIP) from Nigeria's Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC Nigeria) to join its Accelerated Regulatory Incubation Programme (ARIP), marking a step in the exchange's regulatory engagement in one of the world's largest cryptocurrency adoption markets.

Nigeria ranks third globally in Chainalysis' 2026 Global Crypto Adoption Index, behind Brazil and the United States. The country also leads the world in domestic peer-to-peer cryptocurrency activity and cross-border crypto flows, highlighting its position in the global digital asset ecosystem.

The Chainalysis report, which examines activity between July 2025 and June 2026, measures adoption across 117 countries based on cryptocurrency service flows, peer-to-peer transactions, cross-border transfers and on-chain balances. Nigeria's performance reflects particularly strong activity in direct wallet-to-wallet transactions and international transfers.

Against this backdrop, KuCoin Nigeria's conditional approval represents an initial step toward establishing a regulated presence in the country. The AIP, however, does not constitute a final registration, licence or regulatory endorsement, and does not permit the company to commence operations, onboard customers or offer services to the Nigerian public.

As part of the regulatory review, KuCoin Nigeria demonstrated components of its proposed platform and operating model to SEC Nigeria. These included planned trading products and services, fiat on- and off-ramp arrangements, customer onboarding procedures, technology infrastructure, and governance and risk management frameworks.

The development comes as KuCoin continues pursuing regulatory compliance across multiple jurisdictions. In Europe, its KuCoin EU entity has received authorisation under the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCAR) to provide regulated crypto-asset services across the European Union. In Australia, KuCoin operates through Axis One Markets Pty Ltd, which is registered with AUSTRAC as a digital currency exchange provider.

These authorisations and registrations are limited to their respective jurisdictions and do not grant KuCoin Nigeria permission to operate in the Nigerian market.

BC Wong, CEO of KuCoin, commented on the development:

“Receiving conditional Approval-in-Principle from SEC Nigeria marks another important milestone in KuCoin’s global compliance journey. As digital assets become an increasingly important part of the global financial system, trust must be built through continuously strengthening governance, maintaining high compliance standards and enhancing user protection. We value the opportunity to engage constructively with SEC Nigeria through ARIP and to continue building in line with Nigeria’s evolving regulatory framework. Our focus remains on strong governance, high compliance standards and meaningful user protection as we support the responsible and sustainable development of the digital asset ecosystem.”

KuCoin said its approach to regulatory engagement focuses on aligning its operations with local requirements while strengthening governance, transparency, risk management and user protection.

With Nigeria ranking among the world's leading cryptocurrency adoption markets, the company's participation in the regulatory review process reflects its broader efforts to engage with regulators in markets where digital asset activity is significant. KuCoin Nigeria will need to complete the applicable regulatory requirements and obtain the necessary authorisation before offering services to the public.
